It's Your Call: Should marijuana be legalized?

Local, live and lively conversations with you.  That’s what we do every morning as we talk about things in the news and give you a chance to call in and express your opinion.  On this edition of IYC (It’s Your Call), we’re talking about the legalization of marijuana.  A new poll indicates 62% of Americans are now in favor of making pot legal.

I have a hard time with this.  My head tells me it’s no better or worse than alcohol and legalization would free up police to deal with violent crimes and greatly reduce the prison population.  Then there’s my heart or my gut that says legalization would be a disaster because it’s weed and it’s dangerous.  Have I been conditioned to think that way by the government and my parents?  Is it because I’ve never used it?  Perhaps I feel that way because I don’t like smoking ANYTHING?

I struggle with the issue politically as well.  I’m a fiscal conservative and a social liberal.  I believe you should be able to do what you want as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody else. But would legalizing marijuana affect only individuals who decide to legally use it or hurt society as a whole?   I think its far too early to draw conclusions from state’s where its been made legal.  I guess it all comes down to are we willing to experiment nationwide.  I’d hate to be the one to make that decision.

We did have some varying opinions this morning.  For example Big Game Jermaine was firmly on the side of legalization:

Then we heard from Mark,  who adamantly disagreed:

Now IT’S YOUR CALL.  With whom do you agree?

Be sure to listen and call in between 6 and 10 tomorrow morning to wwlfirstnews with me Tommy Tucker because, after all, IT’S YOUR CALL!
