Tommy: Are this year's Saints a team of destiny?

The dictionary defines destiny as “the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future” and “the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future; fate.”  Luck is defined as “success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions” and “chance to find or acquire”.

After Sunday’s - thrilling? Destiny fulfilling?  Lucky? - victory over the Baltimore Ravens, I heard a lot of people saying our Saints were lucky to win and that this is a team of destiny.  Are they?  Will this be OUR year as it was in 2009?  I normally eschew the ethereal when it comes to being the best in anything as I believe hard work and preparation are the keys to success.  However, Sunday’s game got me thinking.

The stars would seem to be aligned in the proper position but not necessarily the defensive backfield.  As good as I feel about the overall way the boys in Black and Gold played to earn the victory, I’m worried about the way the defense allowed the Ravens to move down the field at will and score, leading to the errant extra point.  So in terms of destiny, if the Saints want to control “the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future,” they need to get that fixed and quick.  Is there a “hidden power that controls what will happen in the future?”  Yes there is.  It’s called video study, preparation, coaching and situational awareness so I guess the Saints CAN be a team of destiny.

Anybody who follows football knows that champions, while talented, also have to have luck on their side. This could take the form of avoiding injuries, the ball taking a favorable bounce, a tipped pass turning into a pick six or a kicker missing the first extra point in his entire career to give the opposition a victory.  That would certainly fit the definition of “success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions.”

But I think we need to remember that a lot led to that missed kick.  It started with a “we’re gonna punch you in the mouth” opening drive.  It continued with an amazing second half comeback.  And, don’t forget, some pretty good defensive play before that last Baltimore drive.

So are the Saints a team of destiny? Certainly if THEY control the events that will lead to a desired outcome.  Are they lucky or is that just superstition?  They have been so far but I don’t want to talk too much about that so as to jinx it.  I do know this.  The Saints are a team of coaching, talent and leadership.  Let’s cross our fingers and see how far they can go.
