Teddy Bridgewater: "I’m not Drew, but Drew is the standard"

The man who could be the heir apparent to Drew Brees had a solid showing in the Saints preseason opener.  Teddy Bridgewater got the start at quarterback vs. the Vikings and displayed confidence & command of the offense throwing for 134 yards and 1 touchdown while completing 14 of 19 passes in 2 quarters of action.

“I had to take a step back and say, ‘Hey, I’m not Drew, but Drew is the standard,’” said Bridgewater. “That mindset is chasing perfection, chasing excellence, but at the same time you have to remember; you have to be yourself.”

Bridgewater hadn’t been himself for a while after suffering a career threating knee injury in 2016.  It was a non-contact incident that occurred during training camp while with Minnesota. The team ended up letting him walking free agency a year ago, before the NY Jets signed him, only to send him to New Orleans for a 3rd round draft pick after a stellar showing in 3 preseason games. Did it feel odd, at all, for Bridgewater to play against the team who drafted him in the first round back in 2014?

“It didn’t feel too strange. It actually felt like one of the old practice days but in a game-like tempo. Just knowing what those guys are going to do and I still remember some of their calls and some of their looks and things like that. It was kind of a plus for me. It just felt like one of the old practice days.”
