The Saints claimed Taysom Hill off waivers in September of last year after the undrafted quarterback from BYU went through the Packers training camp & preseason. He would end up on the Saints active roster in December; but as a special team’s player. Still, Coach Sean Payton had a ton of praise for him as a QB.

Hill enters this year’s organized team activities in New Orleans with aspirations of being the #2 guy behind Drew Brees.  How has it been for him now that he’s had an entire offseason to digest the playbook more?

“Oh, it’s so nice,” smiled Hill. “I feel like last year, you start to get into the game plans; the specific things, where it’s hard to get the fundamentals. To be able to start from scratch has been really big for me.”

Starting fresh and getting more opportunities. Last year, Chase Daniel was set as the #2 QB for the Saints, but he is now backing-up Mitchell Trubisky in Chicago.  Did Hill even get much time under center at practice last season?

“Hardly any. There were a few days where I’d get to run the scout team,” replied Hill. “But, I was kind-of joking around with a few guys that this is the first opportunity that I’ve had to take a rep at quarterback in the New Orleans Saints offense. So, the last 3 days have been a ton of fun.”

The 27 year old can sling it and also is quite mobile. Coach Sean Payton raved about his speed saying “some of his spontaneity can present challenges for a defense.”

Week one of organized team activities have wrapped up, but the players will be back at it Tuesday next week. What is Hill’s main focus right now?

“My goal is to make sure that I understand as much and everything that I need to. You’re thrown into an offense where Drew has been with Coach Payton and Pete Carmichael for the last 12 or so years; there’s a lot of catching up to do. So, to me my goal is from the mental standpoint to make sure that I can catch-up.”

We’re till a long way away from preseason games but those will be premium snaps for Hill along with the rest of the QBs not named Drew Brees. That ends up being a big bonus for Saints fans since it will at least make watching the worthless exhibitions a bit more interesting.
