Saints wrap up minicamp with shortened session

The last day of minicamp was a short session for the Saints. Coach Sean Payton ended the practice an hour early. The defense seemed to win the day.  Some standout plays were corner Marshon Lattimore making a nice pass break up covering Michael Thomas, and CB Patrick Robinson had an interception off Teddy Bridgewater. It was PRob's 2nd straight day with a pick.

One big question for the Black and Gold heading into the 2019 season is will they be able to get over getting robbed in the NFC championship game against the Rams. Coach Sean Payton is confident that his team is locked in in the road ahead not the one they’ve already traveled.

“Right now our focus is forward and it has not been something that has been a topic of motivation. It's still about putting yourself in a position to get back. Every team at this time of the year is talking about the postseason and the opportunity to put a good season together and play in the postseason. It starts with trying to win your division first. I would say for most, I'm sure that that's in the rearview mirror.”

The Black & Gold have been breaking in a new center this offseason after the steady and reliable Max Under retired.  The Saints drafted Texas A&M's Erik McCoy and while it’s tough to evaluate the big boys up front in non-padded practices, Coach Payton has been pleased with their 2nd round draft pick.

“He's exceptionally smart,” boasted Payton. “He picks things up well. He's a strong player. So, some of that relative to your strength in what we're doing in these drills maybe you don't get to see as much but just the under center snaps that may have occurred more in this offseason than he was used to, in college, that type of thing. I'm anxious to see him as we get started and he's someone that's picked things up very well.”

There were two botched center/QB exchanges in Wednesday's practice which Payton said will get cleaned up.  Drew Brees feels its just part of the learning process for McCoy.

“We threw him in the fire, I think that's the only way you really get better and you've got to stretch yourself a little bit and put yourself in those uncomfortable situations. I think all that's going to do is

An uncomfortable situation for Brees is a lawsuit that he is going through in California versus a jeweler he claims defrauded him of millions of dollars.

“It's been very stressful and it's ongoing, but we'll get through it.”

Brees was forced to miss time at last week's organized team activities and was absent for the first day of minicamp on Tuesday

“Obviously, I'm the quarterback of his football team and I want to be with the team, but unfortunately there were things that were a bit out of our control that we had to take care of. So take care of that and take life as it comes.”

Hopefully, things can get cleared up soon to ease some of Brees' off the field tension. Training camp is about 6 weeks away.
