The Black & Gold were back in front of Who Dats on a cloudy, morning practice session that provided a few rain drops towards the end of the day.

Cornerback DeVante Harris cleaned out his locker space after getting cut by the team. Meanwhile, rookie defensive end Marcus Davenport remains out of practice.  Also not taking part were wide receivers Cameron Meredith and Tommylee Lewis along with cornerback P.J. Williams, tight end Michael Hoomanawanui and d-lineman Mitchell Loewen. Cornerback and special teamer Chris Banjo left the day’s session early with a trainer under his own power

Taysom striving to be king of the Hill

QB Taysom Hill put in some solid work passing the ball today following his 8 of 9 72 yard performance against the Jaguars.  At one point he had 3 straight completions for big gains. Hill hit RB Shane Vereen in stride in the flat, found TE Garrett Griffin over the middle and put the perfect touch on a back shoulder toss to Brandon Tate.

Having more days like today for Hill will go a long way toward earning that #2 job behind Drew Brees. Consistency is key.

Busted coverages

We saw some busted coverage from the Saints D against the Jags and that carried over to today’s practice. Coach Payton even threw the 1st team defense off the field at one point as he was disgusted. Some of the big plays included Taysom Hill easily finding a wide open Deon Yelder. No one was around the tight end and also somehow Michael Thomas was allowed to run free down the sidelines with no one paying him any mind.

We constantly hear from Payton that players need to be in sync with what they are doing mentally and being able to execute.

Michael Thomas eats up Lattimore

Last season’s defensive rookie of the year Marshon Lattimore may be more of a “gamer” than a practice player. He seems uninterested at times and has been having a ho-hum training camp. There have been times when folks have made a big deal about the camp battle between him and Michael Thomas, but it hasn’t really been much of a competition.

Thomas has abused Lattimore all camp really. While there is a reason he has the nickname “Can’t Guard Mike”; you’d like to see a better showing from your star corner.
