Saints CB Eli Apple eager to get back to work

The Saints could enter the troublesome waters of Tampa Bay down their top cornerback as Marshon Lattimore left the loss to Atlanta with a leg injury. Not great timing as Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are a deadly WR duo that have combined for 1,764 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Buccaneers.

Next man up mentality has worked all season though, and would mean Eli Apple slides over into Lattimore’s spot as the #1 corner. Apple was the Giants first round draft pick in 2016, and is heading into the final year of his rookie deal after the Saints declined his 5th year option back in May.

He was dealt to New Orleans before week 8 last season for a 2019 fourth round pick along with this year’s 7th.  Apple didn’t take long to meld with the team.  The Ohio State family helped the transition with fellow Buckeye’s Lattimore and Vonn Bell in the secondary along with wide receivers Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr.

Now, for the first time since week 2 New Orleans is coming off a loss. The 7-2 Saints dipped to 3rd in the NFC and are 1-1 vs. NFC South foes.

“We can't wait to get back on the practice field. Just kind of get that taste out our mouth,’ said Apple the day after the home loss to Atlanta. “Continue to just get better, to communicate and just get better at all facets.”

A facet the entire defense needs to improve on is takeaways.  They’ve totaled 10 on the year and Apple has forced a fumble, but is still looking for his 1st interception. The 24-year-old picked off 2 passes last season to bring his career total to 3.
