Training camp is coming to a close.  The Saints practiced in front of fans today and will hold their final session tomorrow morning.  After that, the team gets into their regular season mode following Saturday’s preseason contest against the New York Jets.  Not seen at Wednesday’s practice were:

WR Ted Ginn Jr.

WR Simmie Cobbs Jr.

OL Marshall Newhouse

DE Mario Edwards Jr.

LB Alex Anzalone

LB Craig Robertson

S Saquan Hampton

CB/RS Marcus Sherels

We have not seen Anzalone or Sherels since the preseason opener; meanwhile Robertson and Edwards both left last preseason contest with undisclosed injuries.

Coach Sean Payton did announce some changes to the roster.  Linebacker Will Compton was added along with offensive lineman Fisayo Awolaja. In corresponding moves the team waived long snapper Nick Moore and announced that Chris Clark was placed on injured reserve.

Summer of Trey

My “Mr. Consistent” award this training camp goes to defensive end Trey Hendrickson.  He always manages to get his name written down in my practice notes, and for all the right reasons. Hendrickson’s strength was on display as he managed to register sacks on back-to-back plays. On one he used his bull rush to push back 6ft7, 317 pound tackle Andrus Peat.  There is no question he has solidified a role on the Fleur-di-Lis D this season behind Camron Jordan and Marcus Davenport.

Kamara on cruise control

Before heading out to LA for joint practices the running back missed two practices, but if he was nicked-up at all it wasn’t anything serious. Kamara ripped off a big run today and appeared to go untouched by the defense and he galloped into the endzone.  Then a big mismatch occurred when he lined up in the slot and split coverage by CB PJ Williams and LB AJ Klein to get wide open down the seam.  It was money in the bank and Drew Brees hit him with the pass for another score.

Corners creating turnovers

Patrick Robinson and PJ Williams had two nice takeways on the day.  P-Rob made an impressive interception off of Teddy Bridgwater after he jumped in the air with Travin Dural and took the football away from the WR.  Then, Williams honed in on a receiver screen to Austin Carr and was able to punch the ball free.  Robinson and Williams have been competing for the starting nickel role on the team, and think both will end up making the 53- man roster.
