The 9-2 Saints are spending Thanksgiving away from home this season and have limited time to get ready for their road trip to Atlanta on a short week.

“It’s another game,” said Coach Payton when asked if there was any significance in playing on Thanksgiving. “I think after you’ve done this for a while you get used to maneuvering holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas are tough in this industry.”

The Saints got a win over the Falcons last year on Thanksgiving in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, now play in Atlanta‘s Mercedes Benz Stadium looking to even up the season series at 1-1.

“We’re going to have to play a lot better than last time,” Payton acknowledged.

The Falcons rolled the Saints 26-9 in week 10. Atlanta got 6 sacks on Drew Brees as the offensive line deal with a sick Terron Armstead.  This time the left tackle is dealing with a high ankle sprain. The Saints used Patrick Omameh in Armstead’s absence last game.

“He’s improved. He’s someone that we’ve really noticed when getting reps with the scout team,” Payton said of the 6ft4, 327 pound guard. Omameh has been a journey in the league after going undrafted out of Michigan in 2013. Rookie Ethan Greenidge is another current option. The undrafted free agent out of Villanova has been a healthy inactive on gamedays all year.

It would appear that 49ers at Saints was a made for prime time match-up, but week 14 in the Superdome will stay a noon kickoff.

San Fran is 10-1 and play at Baltimore this Sunday before coming to New Orleans. The Niners are currently top dog in the NFC with the Saints and Seahawks a game behind.
