Geller: Good news, bad news at Saints practice

WR Meredith returns, DE Okafor injured

The Saints pushed back their practice time a little bit today and the indoor session had two big positives along with a unsettling negative. First, the good news. Rookie Marcus Davenport and wide receiver Cameron Meredith were back at practice.  Davenport didn't take part in any drills but it was at least good to see him present. Coach Sean Payton talked a little about the first round picks road back.

"The news we're hearing is real good, so he's going to be kind of ramping up and accelerating with regards to getting back on the field. That's encouraging."

Payton said "we'll see", when asked about Davenport playing in preseason game #2 on Friday.  Meredith has a better chance of getting some game action as he at least did take part in the day's session. The team said they would be careful with his snaps this camp as he missed all of last season due to a torn ACL.

Not seen at practice were cornerback PJ Williams and TE Micheal Hoomanawanui. But that's not the bad news.

Defensive end Alex Okafor went down with an apparent leg injury and didn't get up for about 5 minutes. The indoor facility was eerily quiet as some players took a knee around their fallen comrade. Okafor did finally get up and limped over to the sideline with help from a trainer.  Then he left the building on his own and did not appear to have a serious gimp to his step. Okafor suffered an Achilles injury late last season and has looked solid in practice as Coach said he was ahead of schedule in the recovery process.
