Saints quarterback Drew Brees is still dealing with a lawsuit against a jeweler in San Diego, so he was not present for the start of mandatory minicamp.  Instead, Teddy Bridgewater got a chance to work with the first team offense and it could be an early glimpse of what the future holds if/when Brees decides to retire.

“It’s been a great opportunity to get in there with those guys,” said Bridgewater on getting to run the 1st team offense. “When they operate with Drew they are a well-oiled machine. That’s the standard. When you get your opportunity, you just want to go in there and pick up where Drew left off.”

Brees’ personal matter has given Bridgewater a few opportunities. He missed the final week of organized team activities and now the start of minicamp.

“We still start at the same time, we’re still going to play with the brown round ball, we’re going to kick field goals,” said Coach Sean Payton after being asked if things are different with Brees not there. “When you used to having someone like Drew, who has been here going on year 14, obviously it is different. Yet, other guys are getting the work and Brees’ preparation; there is that part of you that knows he is obviously going to be ready for training camp.”

Bridgewater was not at Saints training camp a year ago.  He was acquired from the NY Jets at the end of the preseason, so didn’t get any offseason practices in New Orleans. Digesting the playbook and getting comfortable in the offense last year was a lot harder compared to now.

“It’s a smoother transition,” admitted Bridgewater. “Last year when I got here the day of the last preseason game and that next week we were already game planning; I couldn’t tell you what a certain concept was. But now, jus having this spring under my belt and not having to lean on the fly has been very beneficial to me.”

Teddy’s time with the 1s could last the entire three day minicamp. There has been no indication on f Brees will join the team before their final practice eon Thursday.
