Saints free agent acquisition Cameron Meredith was inactive week 1 against Tampa. The wide receiver has been recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last year in Chicago and missed some time in Saints training camp and the preseason.  Coach Sean Payton was asked if Meredith is behind with his rehab or was their reason he didn’t play against the Buccaneers?

“He is doing well. I think more than anything else, it had to do with just the reps. He was behind coming off training camp. We will see how he is doing this week. From a health standpoint, he is doing well. It is just getting him up to speed from a timing element and getting him the reps he needs to be ready to function and then go out and play consistently.”

In Meredith’s place, Austin Carr got the start in the slot and played 40 snaps on offense. He ended up with just two catches for 20 yards but Payton praised the 24 year old’s performance.

“I thought he played well. We felt he graded out well. When the ball came to him, he made the plays he needed to. He blocked well inside. We thought he did a good job.”

Meredith has a chance to play on Sunday the Cleveland Browns, and the Saints may need him.  The Black & Gold are just 4-13 all-time against the Browns, including losses in their past two meetings in 2010 and 2014.
