Saints rookie Gardner-Johnson lets his game do his talking

In a week where a 49ers running back made headlines in New Orleans for his comments about the Saints home-field advantage, New Orleans rookie safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson wasn't about to put anything on the San Francisco bulletin boards. But he also says he doesn't have to.

"False confidence don’t breed excellence," Gardner-Johnson said. "So I feel like if you go into a game with false confidence, you’re not gonna be able to perform at your peak. I mean, some guys can do it. But… we play at 12 o’clock. If he feels that type of way, we’ll see at 12 o’clock. The game’s over at 3, maybe 4. Like I said, we don’t do all the talking on our side of this team. In general, if you’re a good team, you shouldn’t have to talk about it."

Gardner-Johnson made the comments during his appearance Thursday night on the America Bank & Trust Players Show, and he said the best in the game are generally silent when they're not on the field.

"You probably never hear Tom Brady talk a day in his life," Gardner-Johnson said. "But he’s one of the greatest guys in the game. So in order to be great, you can’t breed false confidence. That’s all I’ve got to say about it."

The Saints host the 49ers at noon on Sunday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Our coverage on WWL starts that morning at 8. You can hear the full audio of Gardner-Johnson's chat with Kristian Garic by clicking the podcast link.
