Saints' Brees undecided about future

Brees "taking a deep breath" after playoff loss

Among the numerous offseason questions facing the Saints, one of the top has to be just who will be starting under center for the Black and Gold.  The three quarterbacks on the roster soon won't be, with Drew Brees, Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill all set to see their contracts expire this offseason.

It's a problem the Saints have seldom had to deal with since the arrival of Brees in 2006, and even when he's faced contract negotiations, he always ended up back in the fold with minimal distraction.  But now Brees is set to turn 41 in a week, and each year he faces the question of when his skills will diminish.  And at the moment, Drew's not ready to answer the question of whether his NFL career will continue.

"I think it’s probably different from year to year, but you definitely take a little while just to take a deep breath," Brees said.  "So certainly after a tough loss like that, that’s kind of where all of us are right now is just taking a deep breath."

Brees and the Saints are still dealing with the disappointment of last Sunday's playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings, a defeat that ended any chance to fulfill their rightfully high expectations of a Super Bowl appearance.  And as such, Brees is not yet ready to make any decisions about his future.

"It’s not a matter of if I can still play," Brees said.  "I know I can still play.  And if I really wanted to, I could probably play for another three or four years.  But at the end of the day, when that decision is made, I don’t want to walk away from this game because I have 32 teams telling me I can’t play anymore.  I want to do it on my own terms.  And when that time comes, you know, I’ll know.  And in large part, it’ll be because of my family.  I’ve played 30 years of organized football.  19 years of professional football.  The 30 years have been three quarters of my life.  I’ve devoted myself to this for so long and had my family sacrifice for this for so long.  These are all the things you take into account when making a decision like that," concluded Brees.

"But listen, it’s less than a week since… shoot… it’s three days. Today’s Wednesday. We’re all just taking a deep breath. That’s where we’re at."
