In second year with Saints, LB Davis says defense is "second nature"

Last season, as the Saints defense took another leap forward, one of the key reasons was the free agency acquisition of linebacker Demario Davis, previously of the New York Jets. Now heading into Year 2 with the Black and Gold, Davis says the playbook has been digested and he’s ready to play hard and fast.

“I think at this point, I’ve got it down pat as best as you can,” Davis said. “I think that’s the key to playing fast. Get it down. Make it second nature so you can focus on what the offense is doing.”

Davis spoke with WWL’s Bobby Hebert after practice and discussed the changing role of linebackers in today’s NFL game.

“It’s a spatial game now,” Davis said. “You have to have hybrid linebackers there who can get the job done in the box and make plays 15+ yards down field because the tight ends are running deeper. Running backs are running deeper, and every now and then you may get on a wide receiver in the slot or something like that. It’s just the nature of the business, and it comes with the position now that you have those responsibilities. So you’ve just got to make sure that you’re prepared to do it and know where to get for those spots.”
