Saints’ Tre’Quan Smith on Dez day 1 and catching THAT pass

Five games into his NFL career, rookie receiver Tre’Quan Smith left an imprint on Saints history by catching THE pass from Drew Brees – the one that put #9 into the record-books as the NFL’s most prolific passer.

“When I caught the pass and I scored,” Smith said, “I hopped in the stands with the fans. And I turned around and I’m like, where are all my teammates at? I saw one or two. And then I looked in the middle of the field huddled around that Drew. And in that moment, I knew that was the pass.

“It was amazing. Honestly, I could say for my first NFL touchdown pass, I don’t get to keep the ball, and I’m happy for that.”

Smith joined Kristian Garic for The Players Show on WWL Radio Thursday night and was also asked about his newest teammate, former Cowboys All-Pro receiver Dez Bryant.

“Out there today, he was very energetic, very enthusiastic,” Smith said of Bryant's first day with the Black and Gold. “You can tell that he feels happy. He was smiling, always had a smile on his face the whole time today. And he was congratulating everybody on their catches like, ‘Good catch, Mike. Good catch, Tre. Good route. I see you. Go ball out.’

“I think that’s important because that’s what our team has. It didn’t feel like he was new at all. It felt like he’d been there for a while because he knew the mojo of what the Saints have. You couldn’t tell he was the new kid on the block.”

Eventually, attention turned to this week’s matchup for the Saints, a road trip to Cincinnati to battle a 5-3 Bengals squad coming off their bye week. Smith said it’s important the Saints come out of the gate hot.

“They’re a great team,” Smith said. “They start off fast, so as an offense, we’ve gotta start off fast. They flow to the ball very well. We’ve got to block this week. I like to block so I gotta make sure I’m on my P’s and Q’s in my blocking. And in the passing game, they’ve got great DB’s, but I know if I do my job I can come open.”

Smith and the Saints square off with the Bengals in Cincinnati this Sunday at noon on WWL. Our pregame coverage starts that morning at 8. You can hear the full audio of Smith’s appearance on the Players Show by clicking the podcast link.
