Mauti: Mistake-free football should push Saints into Super Bowl

With the Saints just one win away from their second Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, the only question that truly matters this week is how do they secure that crucial victory.

Former Saints linebacker and special teams ace Michael Mauti says there are a few factors that could very easily swing the matchup with the Rams in their favor, and one of those is the fact that Sean Payton and Drew Brees have been in this situation before.

"Playoff experience is something you can't replicate," Mauti said. "They can come in with the confidence to know they've been in the biggest moments in the playoffs, and they can come in and perform."

Mauti did say though that the coaching matchups in both of this weekend's conference championship games are truly special.

"You have such great coaches in the final four here," Mauti said. "Most of them are offensive-minded guys. It's a unique year where any one of these four teams can win, and I think scoring defense is gonna have a huge impact on who's gonna win."

Mauti made the comments during his appearance on The Players Show Thursday night on WWL Radio, and he said the games could easily come down to which teams avoid the big mistake.

"Turnovers," Mauti said. "There's one statistic that can determine wins and losses in the NFL, and that's turnover-differential. If the Saints win that, I think it gives you a way better chance of success here.

"There's very little room for error. There's not gonna be as much room as there was last week. They've got to play their best game of the season."

Mauti also talked about the improved play of the Saints defense since the arrival in the offseason of free agent pickup Demario Davis.

"I think he's made a huge difference," Mauti said. "The way the front seven has been playing, it's a credit to Cam Jordan. It's a credit to all those guys up front. They're playing cohesively as a unit, and that's been the difference I think. It's been fun to watch."

The New Orleans Saints host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game Sunday at 2:05pm on WWL. Our coverage starts that morning at 10. You can hear the full audio of Mauti's appearance on The Players Show by clicking the podcast link.
