Kirkwood's key to victory in Tampa: "Do our job"

As the Saints prepare for a rematch with one of only two teams to hand them a defeat this season, one of the battles to watch will be the Black and Gold's young receiving corps against the Buccaneers' defensive backs.

Saints rookie receiver Keith Kirkwood knows they're in for a fight.

"I think they're a tough, physical secondary, but just like any other secondary in this league, we have to just go out and execute and do our job," Kirkwood said. "Make sure we make the play for Drew when the ball is in the air."

Kirkwood discussed the matchup while appearing on the Players Show on WWL Radio Thursday night. He was also asked about the inclement weather that's being expected for gametime in Tampa on Sunday.

"It can definitely affect a receiver, but I think that's more of a mental thing," Kirkwood said. "And I think we're mentally tough to go into this game, whether it's rain, snow... I know it's not going to snow in Florida... but just on the same page of weather conditions. We've got to let that out of our mind and be mentally prepared for this game."

Kirkwood said, while the Saints saw their 10-game winning streak snapped their last time out on the field, none of that matters for this week's game.

"Every single week, we prepare as if we're 0-0 and it's the first game of the season," Kirkwood said. "We've just got to go out and come out with a victory. We prepare. We start all over. We don't dwell off the last loss. We just focus on what's at stake and what's the "now." Now is going out to play Tampa in Florida and coming out with a victory and being 1-0."

Kirkwood and the Saints battle the Buccaneers in Tampa Sunday at noon on WWL. Our coverage starts that morning at 8. You can hear the full audio of Kirkwood's appearance on the Players Show by clicking the podcast link.
