Brees: Saints needed to establish 2019 identity in Week 1

The Saints opened the season with a win for the first time since 2013 Monday night, and in doing so, showed a mental and physical toughness that quarterback Drew Brees believes will serve them well in 2019.

“You’re always looking to establish your identity or re-establish your identity at the start of every season,” Brees said. “Even though you may have the same group of guys, every season stands alone. Every season’s different, and you’ve got to go out and prove it again, year after year and game after game.”

Brees made the comments during his inaugural 2019 “QB To QB” segment with Bobby Hebert on WWL Radio Wednesday night, and he said it’s wins like the one over Houston in Week 1 that mold championship squads.

“I think the more that you encounter games like that where it’s kind of the culmination of every different situation you could imagine, but especially those situations towards the end of the game that obviously will determine the outcome of the game, that’s what makes you battle-tested,” Brees said.

“When you can come out on top of a game like that with those lead changes back and forth, punches being thrown back and forth, finding a way to win in the end is something that definitely strengthens the team and gives you confidence as you move forward.”

Brees and the Saints travel to Los Angeles this Sunday for a rematch of last year’s NFC title game with the Rams. Kickoff is set for 3:25pm. Our coverage on WWL starts that morning at 11. You can hear the full audio of “QB To QB” by clicking the podcast link.
