Brees prepping for “highly aggressive” Panther D

The newly-minted NFC South champion Saints may have locked up the division, but they still have a lot to play for, and they’re facing down a desperate Carolina Panthers squad on the road this Monday night. Losers of five straight, Carolina’s backs are against the wall, and Saints quarterback Drew Brees expects a stiff challenge in Charlotte.

“They’re a highly-aggressive defense,” Brees said. “So if you just look at the stats year-in and year-out, you’d say it’s typically a lot of pressure. They’ve got the best linebacker combo probably in the league with Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Shaq Thompson, just that whole group. They can do a lot of things. They’re smart players. They fly around. They’re really the quarterbacks of the defense, you know. And so, being a divisional opponent you’re familiar with, they’re familiar with us. There’s always new wrinkles going into a game like this. But at the end of the day, I feel like every time we play these guys there’s a lot at stake. It’s just one of those truly hard-fought games.”

Brees made the remarks during his weekly “QB to QB” conversation with Bobby Hebert on WWL Radio Wednesday night. He also broke down why he thinks the Saints offense struggled the past two weeks, and how they turned it around in time to beat the Buccaneers.

“I think a lot of that was just getting into 3rd-and-manageable situations,” Brees said. “In the beginning of the game, we had some penalties and different things to put us into 3rd-and-long. And that’s where they really thrive, right? That’s where the structure of the defense really works in their favor, especially with their pass rush. I felt like once we really gained control of the run game and doing some good things in the passing game and moving the football, the momentum shifted to our side, and we were able to get into 3rd-and-manageable situations.”

Brees and the Saints travel to face the Panthers Monday night on WWL. Our coverage starts that afternoon at 3. You can hear the full audio of “QB To QB” by clicking the podcast link.
