Brees expecting a hard-fought game from Philly

4-5 Eagles have “a lot to play for”

The Saints are gearing up for yet another high-profile matchup, this time hosting the defending Super Bowl champions on national television. And while the Philadelphia Eagles haven’t always played like world champs this season, Saints quarterback Drew Brees says he expects to have to contend with a salty defensive front this Sunday.

“When you look at the statistics on this defense, they’re leading the league in getting pressure on the quarterback with just a four-man rush,” Brees said. “So this is not a team that needs to pressure to get pressure. They’ve got a really good pass-rush with their front four. You turn on the tape, and they’re getting after people with their front four.”

Brees made the comments while appearing on his weekly “QB to QB” segment with Bobby Hebert Wednesday night on WWL Radio, and he said that, though the Eagles’ defense has battled through injuries, they have a lot of pride and a lot on the line when they take the field in the Superdome.

“They’re doing a lot of good things on defense, despite the fact that they’ve been banged up at times,” Brees said. “So credit to them. They’ve got a lot of good players on that side of the ball. They’ve got good leadership. They’re well-coached, very disciplined. And we know they’ve got a lot to play for right now, just like we do. That’s why this should be a heck of a game.”

Brees also commented on the newest member of the Black and Gold, receiver Brandon Marshall.

“He’s really played at a high level everywhere he’s gone, even in the latter stages of his career,” Brees said. “He’s a 13-year veteran. He’s been in a lot of different offenses. I’ve always been impressed watching him on tape. I always feel like he’s a very smart, intelligent player, can play both outside and inside in the slot. He’s a big target, big catch-radius. He’s really smooth in his route-running ability, really good awareness… I think he’ll be able to pick things up fairly quickly.”

Brees and the Saints host the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday at 3:25pm. Our coverage on WWL starts that morning at 11. You can hear the full audio of “QB To QB” by clicking the podcast link.
