The New Orleans Pelicans may have not landed a max-contract player in the early hours of NBA free agency, but they made a big splash nevertheless.  And one that might benefit them more than a player carrying a huge, burdensome contract.

The Pelicans agreed to terms with JJ Redick, the veteran three point sniper who spent the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Sixers.  Redick, who just turned 35, has shot 41.3% from three-point range in his career, including last year's 39.7% clip.  He averaged a career-high 18.1 points per game in 2018-19, and hasn't averaged under 15 points per game in any season since 2012-13.

The deal is reportedly worth $26.5 million over two seasons and is fully guaranteed.

Redick provides the Pelicans with immediate sharpshooting in their backcourt, something most analysts believed the team desperately needed to help a roster that lacked a reliable long-range shooter.  He immediately becomes the team's biggest three-point threat. The former Duke star is one of the best three-point shooters in NBA history.  Redick is No. 21 all-time in NBA career three-pointers made (1,704), and he is No. 18 in career three-point percentage during his 13 season career.

The Pelicans focused on adding premier shooters in free agency, also signing Euroleague star forward Nicolo Melli earlier in the day.
