Possible surprising cuts at WR, TE, and DL

As the Saints head towards their second preseason game the roster battle are coming increasingly intriguing.  In particular the WR, CB, and DL battles are getting intense.  Here’s how I see it shaking out.

Specialists (3)

  • K--Will Lutz
  • P--Thomas Morstead
  • LS--Justin Drescher

Thoughts:  No surprises here.  Lutz is having a fantastic camp and could be a long term answer for the Saints.

QB (2)

  • Drew Brees
  • Chase Daniel

Surprise Cut: Ryan Nassib*

Practice Squad Candidate: Garret Grayson

Thoughts:  I put Nassib in the surprise cut category because most fans, and many media members, have jumped on his bandwagon after a fantastic game against the Browns.  However, with competition at so many other positions I don’t think the team will keep three QBs on the active roster this season.

RB (5)

  • Adrian Peterson
  • Mark Ingram
  • Alvin Kamara
  • Daniel Lasco
  • John Kuhn

Surprise Cut: none

Practice squad candidate: Darius Victor

Thoughts:  I don’t think Cadet has a fit on this roster anymore, and it won’t be surprising to see him cut.  I initially had Lasco as a surprising cut but he value on special teams is too great right now to overlook.

WR (5)

  • Michael Thomas
  • Willie Snead
  • Tedd Ginn Jr
  • Brandon Coleman
  • Corey Fuller

Surprise Cut: Tommylee Lewis

Practice Squad Candidates:  Jake Lampman and Travin Dural

Thoughts: I’m going to get a lot of flack for having Lewis in the ‘cut’ category but I don’t think they can justify keeping him on the 53 man roster.  Fuller and Coleman have had better overall camps as wide receivers in my opinion, and while Lewis brings tangible value as a returner they don’t need that with Ted Ginn and rookie Alvin Kamara both guaranteed to make this roster.   I didn’t have Lewis in the practice squad category because he wouldn’t make it through waivers to get there.   He will find himself a nice home in the NFL this season whether that’s here or elsewhere.  I just think it makes more sense somewhere else.  Yet, if he has another game or two like he did against Cleveland I don't think the Saints will be able to keep him off the roster.

TE (3)

  • Coby Fleener
  • Michael Hoomanawanui
  • John Phillips

Surprise Cut:  Josh Hill

Practice squad candidate: Garret Griffin

Thoughts:  Phillips brings value as a backup long snapper and he’s having a solid camp at the tight end spot.  I could see them keeping Josh Hill but only if they sacrifice elsewhere on the roster, maybe cutting a cornerback that I have on the 53.

OL (9)

  • Max Unger
  • Andrus Peat
  • Larry Warford
  • Ryan Ramczyk
  • Zach Strief
  • Senio Kalemete
  • John Fullington
  • Landon Turner
  • Josh Leribeus

Surprise Cut: Jack Allen,

Practice Squad Candidate: Jerry Ugokwe, Kristjan Sokoli

Thoughts: The coaching staff has been impressed with John Fullington and I think he grabs one of the final roster spots to give the team more depth on an oft-injured offensive line

DL (9)

  • Cam Jordan
  • Sheldon Rankins
  • David Onyemata
  • Tyler Davison
  • Alex Okafor
  • Hau'oli Kikaha
  • Al-Quadin Muhammad
  • Trey Hendrickson
  • Tony McDaniel

Surprise Cut:  Darryl Tapp

Practice Squad Candidate: Justin Zimmer, Ashad Mabry, Alex Jenkins, Mitchell Loewen

Thoughts:  One of the toughest position groups to project, you could easily see Muhammad wind up on the practice squad and Tapp finding a regular spot in the rotation.   I’m going out on a limb and saying the team cuts veteran Darryl Tapp to save salary, as they likely feel their defensive line rotation is deep and talented enough with the rookies Hendrickson and Muhammad having good camps.  Also, I have Mitchell Loewen getting caught up in the Delvin Breaux injury roster adjustments, and being cut in favor of the team keeping an extra cornerback.

LB  (7)

  • Stephone Anthony
  • Manti Te'o
  • Craig Robertson
  • Nate Stupar
  • Mike Mauti
  • Alex Anzalone
  • A.J Klein

Surprise Cut:

Practice Squad Candidate: Adam Bighill

Thoughts: There’s been lots of talk about Bighill thoughout camp.  Unless he establishes himself as a special team’s star he is destined for the practice squad.  The other roster spots in this group are  pretty straightforward

DB (10)

  • Kenny Vaccaro
  • Vonn Bell
  • Rafael Bush
  • Marcus Williams
  • P.J Williams
  • Marshon Lattimore
  • De'Vonte Harris
  • Ken Crawley
  • Delvin Breaux
  • Sterling Moore

Surprise Cut:  Damian Swann,

Practice Squad Candidate: Arthur Maulet

Thoughts:  This list changed for me after Breaux’s injury. I had Sterling Moore as a cut, but he will likely hold down a roster spot until Breaux returns to give the team 5 active corners.  Maulet has had a nice camp but there’s no spot for him in a very deep secondary.

PUP list or Short Term IR:  Terron Armstead
