A new year, a familiar state champion.

The Lafayette Christian Knights played Ascension Catholic Bulldogs in 2017 for the Division IV state football championship, prevailing in 10-0 in a low-scoring defensive struggle.  The Knights met the Bulldogs again this year in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and this time the title game wasn't close, with Lafayette Christian winning by a final score of 56-7.

The game was close throughout the first half, with the score 14-7 in favor of the Knights at halftime.  Ascension Catholic would consistently move the football on offense during the first three quarters, but were just as consistently unable to find the end zone.  That's a bad recipe against a defense that allowed just one team to score point during the regular season.  The Bulldogs would score once, but it wasn't near enough against a ferocious, playmaking Knights defense.

Lafayette Christian captures their second consecutive Division IV championship, but don't expect them to repeat again.  They'll be moving up to Division III beginning next season.
