Count the Voice of the New Orleans Saints, Jim Henderson, as one of the relative optimists about the team's 2017 fortunes.  Henderson, who is entering his 31st season calling games for the Saints, sees a better team than the past few seasons.

"I think everybody is more encouraged than they were a year ago," he said. "I think the results of the preseason are indicative of that."

That preseason included wins against the Chargers and Texans where the defense, much maligned in prior seasons, didn't allow a touchdown.

Not everything will be easy, however.  The NFL schedule makers did the Saints no favors by putting the team on the road three of the first four weeks, including a game against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots who will be coming off an extended rest period after their opening week loss to the Chiefs on Thursday night.

"You're playing a Monday Night game.  The Patriots are playing on Thursday, so they have an extra few days of rest than you have," Henderson lamented.

Yet in the end most people expect the team's improvements to translate to the win column.

"I'm somewhat encouraged too," he said.  "I don't think it's going to be another 7-9 season.  I'm going as high as 8-8."
