Deuce: Saints defense "rounding into form"

The New Orleans Saints completed a season sweep of the Atlanta Falcons with a 31-17 win on Thanksgiving night in the Superdome.

It was a night that belonged to a Saints defense that forced four Falcons' turnovers as well as grabbing six sacks of Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan.

"You're definitely rounding into form any time you can create that much pressure," said Saints color analyst Deuce McAllister when asked if the defense is emerging as one of the NFL's better units.   "When they got in the red zone, the Saints were able to get some turnovers.  It really started on the first drive for Matt Ryan. Marcus Williams was able to come up with the strip there.  Cam Jordan was able to get sacks.  Sheldon Rankins was able to get sacks. This team can be very, very disruptive."

The Saints defense is certainly being helped by a historically great Saints offense.  The Falcons decided to risk going for it on 4th and 7 inside their own territory in the second quarter rather than punting the ball back to New Orleans.   The Eagles did something similar last week when they gambled on 4th down twice inside their own 40 yard line in the second half.

"You're talking about the second quarter you feel like you can't punt this ball away," McAllister remarked.  "If that's the case the Saints are putting an incredible amount of pressure on opposing offenses forcing them to score."

That Saints offense their usual efficient, crisp selves in this game with multiple drives ending without scores in the first half.   Scoring on every drive, or even a majority of drives, is an absurd standard to hold even an NFL team to, but it's the benchmark this offense has set during their incredible season.  McAllister thought most teams would certainly take what the Saints are probably considering a struggle.

"How many teams would say, oh we only scored 31 points this week?" he said.

The Saints now prepare to face a suddenly-surging Dallas Cowboys team on the road next week.
