Scoot: Is President Trump the ringmaster of a 3-ring circus?

November 20, 2018 - 10:17 am

There is a 3-ring circus in Washington, and President Trump is the ringmaster.  The 3-rings are: the right, the left and the media.  And like any successful circus, there are plenty of sideshows featuring freak acts.

One of the new shows in the circus is an act where the truth about President Trump’s order to send U.S. troops to the border with Mexico is being juggled with the questionable premise that the troops were sent to the border with Mexico as a national security necessity to prevent a caravan of migrants from entering the United States.

The Trump administration ordered the troops to the border shortly before the midterm election and there now appears to be a move to get many of the troops home to their families for Thanksgiving.  Many saw this action as nothing more than a publicity stunt designed to rally the Republican base before the midterms, but many could see that the deployment to the border was nothing more than a stunt.  Many of the troops were unarmed and restricted from any interaction with migrants, unless for self-protection.  After the big show of sending the troops to the border, the White House is now featuring a circus show about trying to maintain the illusion that the troops were really needed.

In another ring of the political circus there is the balancing act with the White House trying to balance the need to revoke CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s press credentials with the legal reality that the Trump White House made a mistake in suspending Acosta’s credentials in the first place.  This circus act is being exposed as nothing more than a show by President Trump, inspired by a heated exchange with an antagonistic reporter.  The White House has now fully restored the press credentials of Jim Acosta, and CNN has dropped its lawsuit against the White House.

One of the other main acts in the 3-ring circus starred President Trump as a daring performer who showed his bravery by criticizing a retired Navy SEAL who led the mission to find and kill Osama bin Laden.  This circus act debuted this past weekend on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace.  President Trump was faced with a comment made by Admiral William McRaven, who orchestrated the raid to kill bin Laden, in February of 2017.  Admiral McRaven said that President Trump’s relentless attacks on the media were the “greatest threat of democracy” he has witnessed in his lifetime.

An angry, but daring President Trump used a virtual verbal whip to cower the celebrated admiral back into his cage.  Trump said that if the admiral were really good at what he does then he would have killed Osama bin Laden a lot sooner and went on to condemn Admiral McRaven as a Hillary Clinton and Obama-backer.  Ringmaster Trump ignored the point Chris Wallace made when he pointed out to the President that Admiral McRaven did not endorse anyone in the 2016 campaign.

This is not a Trump-bashing blog.  This is an blog that uses the First Amendment to critique the 3-ring circus now performing with daily shows in D.C. that is juggling the truth and trying to balance showmanship with a credible image of competence.

Oh, and there is that other sideshow of the hypocrisy over Ivanka Trump’s use of her private email account for government business.

The circus in Washington, D.C. has been going on a long time, but there is no question that great credit goes to the new ringmaster for bringing new, and more exciting acts and freak shows to the big tent.

There are rumors spreading through Hollywood that President Trump is up for the lead role in the sequel to the recent movie about P.T. Barnum.  Production of “The Greatest Showman, Too” is set to begin soon.
