Scoot: Go to a concert - add years to your life!

Watching Jon Bon Jovi on stage at a recent concert and hearing all of the iconic Bon Jovi hits, like, “Livin’ On A Prayer,” “You Give Love A Bad Name” and “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” gave me an escape from my problems and insecurity and sent a rush of adrenaline through my body.  It was the same feeling I have gotten from being at other concerts.  It felt good to be there, but I didn’t realize it might be adding years to my life.

A recent study by the UK music venue, O2, and Patrick Fagan, an expert in behavioral science at Goldsmith University, discovered that going to hear live music regularly can add almost a decade to your lifespan.

The study found that 20 minutes at a live concert led to a 21% increase in a “feeling of well-being,” compared to a 10% increase from yoga and a 7% increase in well-being from walking the dog.  Furthermore, the study established a direct link between a feeling of well-being and lifespan.  Attending a live music concert at least once every two weeks increased an individual’s lifespan by 9 years.  Live music events also improved mental stimulation by 75%.

We feel great when we go to see an artist we like perform live, but is our physical attendance at the concert the only factor that my lead to expanding our lifespan?

Often studies appear to point to an obvious conclusion, but factors surrounding that conclusion cannot be ignored.  For example, the study shows that people who go to at least one live concert every two weeks added longevity to their lives.  The type of person who would physically go to concerts that regularly is likely to be a more active person, and that is a key element in longevity.  Also, the anticipation of an upcoming concert provides a positive distraction from life’s daily stress and that is a factor in longevity.

A study showing that going to live concerts on a regular basis can lead to expanding our lives by nearly a decade is great news, but I think the type of people who go to concerts regularly is an important factor and it’s not just being at the concert that adds years to our lives.

However, just going to concerts will not add years to your life if you regularly over-consume alcohol or do a gram of coke at every concert!
