A social media post from the New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady went viral, and some of the reaction was negative, condemning Brady for endangering the life of his 6-year-old daughter, Vivian.

While vacationing in Costa Rica, the video shows Brady with his young daughter as they dived together off a cliff that was probably between 10 and 20 feet high. The caption on the post read: “If Vivi is going to be an Olympic champion one day, it probably won’t be in synchronized diving. Daddy always gives her a 10 though!”

From what you witness in the video – do you think Tom Brady put his child in danger? Some criticized Brady, saying he acted irresponsibly and “endangered the welfare of a minor and child protection custody should investigate this immediately.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posted: “You KNOW I have complete faith in you as a man, friend, player and father – but this gave me anxiety. Geeezus.”

Tom Brady did a bold thing with his young daughter, but I don’t think it qualifies as endangering the welfare of a child.  Furthermore, I think it is absurd to call on Child Protection Services to investigate.

There is always a debate over parents who are too daring with their children and those who are too overly protective. Parents have the responsibility of keeping their children safe while also teaching them how to live life without being afraid.

The condemnation here is another example of how we have evolved into a society that feels the need to be involved in the lives of others and the need to direct some people on how to lead their lives. Brady talks to his daughter and carefully approaches the edge of the cliff.  He then holds her hand as he counts down to the moment they jump. Those seem like the actions of a caring father – who wants to introduce his daughter to the idea of taking calculated risks.
