Newell: Shame on the Mayor of Oakland

February 28, 2018 - 6:05 am

We're closing in on the DACA deadline and we're still stuck on what immigration reform should look like.  The Mayor of Oakland, Libby Schaaf, announced over the weekend that she would share news about immigration raids, thereby letting illegal immigrants know ahead of time that the raids were coming.  Does this make any sense or are we spiraling out of control as a country?

Check out some of Newell Normand's HOT TAKES:

  • Everytime I think I’ve seen it all; I see something else.  Things never cease to amaze me.  ICE has stated they’re going after criminal aliens, criminals aliens who have violated statues, committing crimes like murder, rape, and gang activities.
  • These are the people this Mayor says she has a moral obligation to protect. I don’t get it.  I don’t understand this line of thinking at all.  If one of the sources of her information was from her own police department, she and some of the members of that police department should be arrested for obstruction of justice because the people she isn’t protecting are the federal law enforcement officers.
  • I hope and I pray those officers aren’t hurt or injured in the line of duty because, Mayor Schaaf, that is going to be on you.  The element of surprise for these raids is key to the safety and security to the federal law enforcement officers who are out there risking their lives every day.
  • Mayor Schaaf, this I say to you.  SHAME ON YOU!  You want to be involved in a political battle, a political diatribe?  So be it.  But do not do it at the expense of the federal law enforcement officers who are trying to keep your city safe.

A caller weighed in, accusing Newell of using buzzwords and not knowing what he was talking about.  Newell was having none of it.

  • Community policing is not harboring criminals.  You either violated the law, or you haven’t violated the law.  Saying community policing involves putting blinders on and letting people engage in criminal activity is a smokescreen.  It’s a smokescreen.  Just to love them to death and hoping they come to their senses isn’t community policing.

You HAVE to listen to Newell's whole conversation.
