Newell: Justice is blind but is it stupid?

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel calls it a white wash of justice.  Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says justice was not served.  I could not agree more.  The decision to drop charges against actor Jussie Smollett for a fake criminal act is just plain stupid.

We’re taking about an agreement/non-agreement wherein the state Attorney General says, “The bottom line is, we stand behind the investigation.  We stand behind the decision to charge him.  The fact that (Smollett) feels that we have exonerated him, we have not.  I can’t make it any clearer than that.”

Clear as mud.

Jussie Smollett says, “I’ve been truthful and consistent from day one.”

Now it makes sense!

Jussie fabricated a story and now the state Attorney General is fabricating an outcome.  The Illinois State’s attorney’s office crafted a plea deal with themselves. They negotiated with themselves, then sealed the records.  In the end they say they’re not compromising the police investigation, but that’s exactly what they did.

Wonderful deal for the citizens of Chicago.  Jussie Smollett gets to still claim his innocence.

Why is this deal dangerous for the community?  The integrity of the truth is really all we have.  To lose it is a huge price to pay…much greater than the costs of investigating a liar.
