Newell: ICE a terrorist organization? Ask Obama, Clinton & Bush

New York gubernatorial canditate/actress, Cynthia Nixon has called ICE a “terrorist organization, with its egomaniacal leader Donald Trump.” She thinks ICE should be abolished. Several other politicians on the far left are saying the same thing.

ICE-terrorists? Really?

Here are some of Newell Normand's HOT TAKES:

  • We have this new mantra from some politicians that  “ICE is a terrorist organization."  While there isn't a universal definition of what a terrorist organization is, in a basic sense, it's an organization that uses violence or the threat of violence in the pursuit of political, religious, social, or ideological objectives.  Are we saying ICE fits that bill?
  • When we look back at the past several administrations, going back to the Reagan years, we have had millions upon millions upon millions of apprehensions and deportations.  When we look at that, what has changed?  Why has the rhetoric changed?
  • The Obama administration and others had a practice of removal.  If you were caught coming across the border illegally, they'd remove you and send you back across the border.  Let's add the numbers up.  In 2015, there were over 300,000 removals under the Obama administration and about 130,000 returns.  So we removed about 430,000 people from the country, 430,000 people we deemed a threat or didn't want in the country.  And ICE is a terrorist organization?
  • I just want to point out, too, that under the Clinton administration, total apprehensions totaled 12 million in those 8 years.  It was 5.3 million under the Obama administration and 9.2 million under the Bush administration.  This is something that has run across both parties for decades.
  • If you grab the parent at the border, according to the law, you're not allowed to keep the parent and the child in jail together.  That's a byproduct of enforcing the law.  And then the federal government ends up with the burden of trying to find a place for the child because their parent violated the law.
  • This is something that Congress has to figure out.  We ask the enforcement organization to go out and enforce the law, like we ask the police to go out and find the bad guys who are violating the law.
  • From my perspective, there's a complete and total misunderstanding of what role ICE plays.
