Newell: Bill Cosby’s dark side surprised even me

Bill Cosby was an icon as an actor, comedian and educator. His role as a civil rights advocate can never be understated. However, as a result of his criminal legal issues and carrying the label of “sexually violent predator,” will more likely than not lead to a complete erasure of all Bill Cosby’s accomplishments - as well it should.

Bill Cosby was stripped of honors from Brown University, Fordham University, Notre Dame and Yale University…the Television Academy Hall of Fame, Film Academy, two Kennedy Center Honors…and now attempts to remove his Hollywood star.

For me - this disgrace…this fall from grace… is very disappointing. I was a huge fan of “The Cosby Show” and his acting life. Bill Cosby was one of my favorite comedians; he could make me laugh without saying a word. I truly enjoyed his wholesome, clean humor. And, finally, his activism. I did not always agree with his opinion, but I always thought Bill Cosby approached controversial issues with intellect, emotional intelligence and respect for all.

For those reasons - shock, horror and complete disappointment best describe my feelings about these incidents and the outcome. What a waste! A dark side that destroyed the lives of so many women - over sixty in number.

The ultimate disappointment for me is Bill Cosby has chosen to show no remorse.

May God bless the victims, their families and the Cosby family. In the end there are no winners - everyone loses.

As a sheriff and law enforcement officer for so many years, I’ve seen a lot of light turn to darkness. Eventually the darkness that lurks inside some people doesn’t surprise. This one did.
