Another week, another big win for the New Orleans Saints.  They routed the Philadelphia Eagles 48-7 and improved to 9-1.  WWL NFL analyst Mike Detillier said it was a complete team effort.  “It’s across the board, offense and defense.  They gave up a couple big returns on special teams, but other than that, it was another total beat down of a pretty good football team,” said Detillier.

The Black & Gold offense may usually get most of the attention, but the Saints defense has been allowed just 21 points over their last two games, while also forcing five turnovers.

“The biggest surprise is how well they’ve played on defense,” Detillier said.  “They didn’t play well early, but this one makes a lot of plays for you.  Come playoff time, it isn’t going to be these wild shootout games.  You’re going to be involved against the best of the best, and you’re going to have to play defense.”

Of course, the offense has been playing at an elite level, too.  New Orleans scored 144 points in its last three games, putting up 94 points in the first halves alone.  Against Philadelphia, the Saints raced out to a 24-7 halftime lead.

“You could just see, it knocked the air out of the defending Super Bowl champions very early in the game,” pointed out Detillier.  “You’re scoring 24 points in the first half against that team?  It just continues to amaze.”

The Saints are scoring and racking up the yards, and they’re doing it with a variety of players.  Rookie wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith hauled in 10 catches for 157 yards.  Rookie Keith Kirkwood and second year players Dan Arnold and Austin Carr combined for 6 receptions, 61 yards and a touchdown.

“This is what Drew Brees does best, distribute the ball across the field,” gushed Detillier.  “He does it as well as anyone I’ve seen in my lifetime.  He wants to keep players involved in the game and make sure everybody gets their opportunities.  Very few guys in this business are like that.  If you’ve got Drew’s confidence, he’ll get you the football.”

The bottom line for Detillier?

“The machine is rolling.”
