Detillier: The Saints are cooking

The New Orleans Saints were just on against the Cincinnati Bengals, according to WWL NFL analyst Mike Detillier.  “No matter what you do, it works.  You understand there are some days everything goes right, and there are days when nothing goes right.”

For the Saints, it was one of those days when everything went right.  For the Bengals…well, not so much.  And the 51-14 final score reflected it.  Drew Brees threw for 265 yards and has as many touchdowns as incompletions (3).  The Saints ground game racked up 244 yards; and Mark Ingram led the way with 104 yards, averaging 8 yards per carry.  Detillier praised Ingram’s performance.

“After missing 4 games, Mark Ingram got his sea legs under him, so to speak,” observed Detillier.  “You can train all you want, but you can’t train to get hit and play this game.  It’s not a switch you can flip on and off.  Ingram finally got it back.”

Ingram is not the player the Saints turned to.  Alvin Kamara had over 100 yards from scrimmage, and Michael Thomas scored 2 touchdowns while hauling in 8 receptions.  For Detillier, opposing defenses just have to pick their poison.  “What weapon do you want to stop?  With Mark Ingram, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, and Drew Brees throwing the ball the way he did, there just aren’t enough defenders to stop everybody.”

The skill players weren’t the only ones Detillier complemented.  “This is all starting from the offensive line and how good they’re playing,” Detillier said.  “You see very little pressure around Brees.  The linemen have that ability to make that key block or get to the second level to spring a play.”

It was not just the offense that had a good day.  The Saints defense forced two turnovers and limited the Bengals to just 14 points, 7 of which came in the final 5 minutes.  “The defense gives up yardage, and at times they give up points.  There are no great defenses in the NFL now.  That’s just the way it is.   But, Sunday, the Saints defense played really well.  They bent, but they came up with some key plays.”

The bottom line according to Detillier?  “Everything is working right now.  Man, this team is cooking; and they’ve got everybody’s attention.”
