With the NFL Draft now just days away, Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis held his annual pre-draft press conference Monday. Loomis covered a wide range of topics regarding the Black and Gold.

Loomis said, as far as the Saints’ 2019 schedule is concerned, he felt it is relatively favorable.

“I kinda like the schedule,” Loomis said. “I’ll be honest with you. Our opponents are pre-determined. It’s just a matter of when we play them. We’ve got our bye right in the middle of the season. I like that. Those first four weeks are tough opponents, but we’re going to have to play them anyway over the course of the year.

“We have five national games,” Loomis continued. “Four primetimes. Three of those are at home. I like that, too. So I think we like our schedule.”

Loomis said he believes the Saints’ roster after its additions in free agency has allowed the team to once again utilize a “best player available” strategy in the upcoming draft.

“We have a list of items we want to get accomplished in the offseason. I think for the most part we did that,” Loomis said.

Loomis addressed one issue that has plagued the Saints for the last half-decade: They’ve lost their season opener five years in a row.

“We’re always focused on starting fast,” Loomis said. “We’ve had teams that have played some good games against us more than anything. We’ve got a home game against a really tough opponent on Monday Night Football. We’ve had success in those primetime games. Hopefully we’ll have success this year.”

The Saints aren’t scheduled to have a draft selection until the 30th pick of the second round (#62 overall). We’ll have full wall-to-wall coverage of the entire NFL Draft though on WWL beginning Thursday night.
