As the NFL draft approaches, I’ll be analyzing some of the players who might be of interest to the Saints at positions of need with the help of WWL NFL Draft expert Mike Detillier.

We’ll start with a spot where the Saints have certainly had to lean on their depth the last few years: offensive line. Detillier says there are a couple of players he could see New Orleans targeting, one of them possibly even with their first pick of the draft, the 30th selection of the second round (#62 overall).

Dalton Risner – OT – Kansas State – r-SR

6’5” | 312 lbs.

Hometown: Wiggins, CO

Detillier’s take: He’s played left tackle, center and right tackle at Kansas State. Four-year starter, a great technician, a guy that is experienced as a pass protector. A good run-blocker. Just a real sharp guy across the board. I think he’s a guy that, if he would fall into the second round, that this football team would have some interest in because of his versatility. And he’s a guy that’s gonna come in right away and play. There’s gonna be no redshirt for him. He’s got that availability. If you needed him, he could step right in and play for you. He’s somebody I would take a long look at.

Martez Ivey – G – Florida – SR

6’5” | 315 lbs.

Hometown: Apopka, FL

Detillier’s take: He’s started at both left guard and left tackle. Big mammoth guy. Good pass protector. Solid run blocker. He needs to watch his weight not to get too heavy. When he’s in great shape, he’s been a force. And he’s been a left tackle at Florida. Jawaan Taylor, who’s gonna end up being a first-round pick, has mostly played on the right side. It means Martez Ivey is a pretty doggone good football player. I think he’d be a little bit later in the draft, say third or fourth round.

Detillier says the Saints always take a long look at offensive linemen who can play multiple positions. Both of these prospects live up to that qualification and could draw the team’s interest on draft day.
