Brees: Saints must execute “to perfection’ against Panthers

Drew Brees joined Bobby Hebert on WWL Radio Wednesday night for their weekly “QB To QB” chat, and he started by extolling the virtues of winning the NFC South.

“What that does,” Brees said, “is just positions you for the ability to make a run in the playoffs. The fact that we win the division, we get that first home field game against a very good opponent, one that we’re very familiar with. A divisional opponent who’s also had a great year – it should be a great game.”

Brees then switched gears to discuss the production of second-year receiver Michael Thomas, headed to the Pro Bowl for the first time this season.

“He’s a fun guy to come and work with every day,” Brees said. “I love his focus and intensity with every rep. It doesn’t matter if it’s a walk-through rep, a practice rep, or a game rep. He approaches it all the same. He’s thirsty for knowledge. He wants to be great, and he certainly works for it. And it’s always fun when you have young receivers who have that type of mentality and that want to work. You begin to see the progress and the light bulb begin to come on, so to speak. The more time that you get together, and the more that you’re able to open up the playbook and really expose him to a lot of things that maybe he hasn’t done in the past, and yet we feel like there are opportunities. Obviously he’s a guy who you want to get the ball in his hands. We feel like he can do a lot of good things. So listen, his accomplishments over the last two years have been remarkable.”

Brees closed out talking about the Saints’ first playoff opponent, division rival Carolina, and in particular the Panthers vaunted defensive unit.

“I’ve got a ton of respect for these guys,” Brees said. “Obviously, Luke Kuechly is one of the best players in the game. He’s one of the smartest players I’ve ever played against. His preparation, his film study, his knowledge of the game his ability to make adjustments on the fly is second to none. It just makes me and the entire offense realize that we’ve got to be on point. We’ve got to be on point with everything we’re doing. Our execution has to be to perfection. We’ve got to take advantage of every opportunity we get against these guys.”

Brees and the Saints host the Carolina Panthers in the Superdome this Sunday in a wild-card round playoff game. Kickoff is set for 3:40pm with pregame coverage on WWL starting at 11am.
