Booed relentlessly, Davis drops 41 on Pelicans

LISTEN: Pels give up big lead, can't close out Lakers

A promising start gave way to a disappointing finish last night for the Pelicans, who jumped out to a big lead on one of the NBA's best teams, but couldn't close the deal in the fourth quarter.

The Pelicans led by as many as 15 over their former star Anthony Davis and the visiting Los Angeles Lakers.

But it was Davis who fueled L.A.'s comeback, doing things to the Pelicans that he used to do for the Pelicans.

Davis finished with 41 points, the most ever for a player in his first game against his former team, and his always tenacious defense proved to be the backbreaker as he stole an inbounds pass intended for Brandon Ingram in the closing seconds. The Pelicans trailed by two at the time and could have tied the game or won it on the last shot.

Instead, Davis drew the foul and calmly put the game away with two makes from the line, helping the Lakers escape New Orleans with a 114-110 win.

In the end, it was a hard lesson in late-game poise but could also serve as an important marker of the potential in place in New Orleans.

The Pelicans get tonight off. They'll be in Oklahoma City tomorrow night for the first of two straight games against the Thunder.
