Saints sweating the details

How does that saying go? The devil is in the details?  The Saints might be the team no one wants to face in the NFL these days having won three straight games in large part due to an opportunistic defense and efficient offense. The Saints aren't letting the little things get by them as they prepare for Sunday's clash with the Packers.  All of a sudden the Saints have figured some things out and the players are even starting to mention playoffs in conversations with the media.  However, the team is embracing the detail oriented approach in preparing. "We still have some areas we need to improve on. We're a close group, and that's going to take us a long way," CB Ken Crawley said. The Saints are five point favorites this Sunday against Green Bay.

I like hearing the players talk about details, and the small things that help teams win. That's a sign of a maturing team that understands what it takes to win in the league.  For the better part of three years the Saints overarching message has been young players sometimes take a while to understand how important the little things are in winning football in the NFL.  I talked to Bill Huber from Packerreport.com and he painted a very dire picture for the Packers after losing QB Aaron Rodgers (broken collarbone) this past week against the Vikings.  Huber pointed out to the number of injuries on the Packers aside from Rodgers.  The team has three offensive linemen that are dealing with injuries that could keep them out of this week's game against the Saints.  The Packers are also really banged up on defense.  This game has all the makings of a win for the Saints save from completely laying and egg, and turning the ball over several times.

As banged up as the Packers are, the Saints are on the opposite end of the injury spectrum.  LT Terron Armstead (shoulder) and WR Willie Snead (hamstring) were the only two players listed on today's injury report with limited participation in practice.  Both were limited in practice last week and sill played against the Lions. The Packers injury report reads more like the Gettysburg address.  Yesterday Green Bay listed 14 players on the injury report. Today they listed 9.  S Morgan Burnett (hamstring), QB Aaron Rodgers (shoulder), G Lane Taylor (ankle), LB Joe Thomas (ankle) and LB Ahmad Brooks (back) all missed practice today.  T David Bakhtiari (hamstring) was limited in practice today.
