Saints Mini Camp

Saints D impresses, still no word on Michael Thomas absence

DEEEEEFence:  Incremental growth is how I would describe the progress of the Saints defense since last season.  Some of the little things that might have plagued the Black & Gold last year appear to be fixed in OTA's and what we've seen in Mini Camp. The Defense won the day again today in the two minute drill portion of practice.  A couple of standouts on defense early in camp are Safety Kurt Coleman and to nobody’s surprise CB Marshon Lattimore.

Depth:  Three years ago the Saints were largely comprised of expensive, over the hill veterans, and un-drafted, under talented players who affected the team’s depth. The 2018 roster has quickly changed that.  There will be several players, who don't make this final roster, that will land and possibly start on other NFL teams this fall.

Former Saints offensive lineman Steve Korte is nothing but impressed.  He told me, "This is the best offensive line group the Saints have had, period!  I think they have eight guys on the offensive line who could start right now on any NFL team."

Wow!  That puts it in perspective.  Look at the depth they have at wide receiver.  I think the same can be said for that position too.  Depth typically translates into success and wins.  At some point in every NFL season your depth is put to the test because of injuries.  The Saints have the depth to withstand some injuries at several key positions.

Mike Thomas:  For the second straight day, WR Mike Thomas was not at Saints Mini Camp.  Sean Payton told us yesterday that the absence was excused.  His absence could not be contract related.  Let me explain, the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) says a player drafted after the 2011 league cannot renegotiate his rookie contract, until he completes year three of the contract.  Thomas has been on social media during his absence, and it's fair to guess this could be a personal matter, not an injury.

No go:  Saints rookie DE Marcus Davenport did not practice today, after leaving the field with trainers in the first day of Mini Camp.  Davenport is scheduled to have minor surgery on one of his thumbs after Mini Camp and is expected to return for training camp at the end of July.
