Monday Morning Quarterback: Saints are just scratching the surface

Don't look now, but the Saints are in first place in the NFC South and riding a four game winning streak after beating the Green Bay Packers 26-17 in Lambeau Field in week seven.

The Saints trailed at the half 14-7.  They weren't playing their best football, giving up a few big plays on defense and turning the ball over twice on offense via two Drew Brees interceptions; and being able to battle adversity successfully is something the Saints of the past three years weren't always adept at doing.  Saints quarterback Drew Brees said it was a big step in the right direction to battle back in this one.

"This was big, we showed a lot of resolve to overcome early mistakes. We stayed really poised and we knew we were going to take control of this game at some point. We just couldn't wait too long."

Brees and the Saints rallied for 19 points in the second half while holding the Packers to just three.  Despite the turnovers, the Saints managed over thirty five minutes in time of possession.

Are the Saints merely scratching the surface of their ability to play winning football?

"There is so much football left to be played. We have 10 more regular season games left. None more important than this week against Chicago. We've won four in a row now we want to win five in a row," Saints QB Drew Brees told me when I asked him that very question.

I would say Brees is right on the money.  This Saints team is only getting better with time.  They didn't play their best football and still managed a nine point win on the road. During the Saints four game winning streak, they've had victories of 21, 20, 14, and 9 points.  The average margin of victory in the NFL is three points, and the Saints are well above the average.
