The LSU Tigers went into this National Signing Day hoping to add to their defensive line and cap off an already very impressive 2019 recruiting class.  The prize recruit on this second signing day is Amite defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher.  The Alabama Crimson Tide plucked Sopsher from LSU.

Ed Orgeron vowed after the loss to Alabama in November that he has to recruit better offensive and defensive lineman to beat Alabama.  Sopsher is the 5th ranked defensive lineman in the country, according to most recruiting sites.

The Tigers were able to land an extraordinary athlete, Amite WR DeVonta Lee.  He’s big…6’2 and 212 pounds.  Lee will give the Tigers more size and strength on an already bigger than average LSU receiving corps.  “Lee’s a big bodied receiver; he’s magnificent at high pointing the ball in traffic.  He’s a bit unpolished in his route running.  I think he’s a developmental receiver down the line,” said Jimmy Smith of

LSU also picked up an edge rusher from Mesa Junior College…defensive end Soni Fonua.  The Tigers also flipped CB Chad Simmons.  The three star recruit was leaning heavily towards Kentucky, but today decided to join the Tigers in Baton Rouge.  Corey Raymond the Tigers cornerbacks coach played a big part in flipping Simmons to LSU.  The Tigers also received a commitment from Athlete Maurice Hampton, after a long flirtation with Auburn.

The 2019 class for LSU is considered to be a good one, but the inability to land Sopsher hurts a bit.  “It’s a really good class.  There are a lot of impact players in this class.  This is probably an A- type class,” Smith added.   Once again Nick Saban comes to LSU’s backyard and recruits a top player away from Baton Rouge.
