Kristian: Hope Will Lutz is ready for his moment against Rams

The Saints are favored by 3.5 points over the Rams Sunday in the NFC Championship game.  Oddsmakers see this coming down to a field goal, likely for the Saints to win the game in perhaps the waning moments of the game.  Recent history, however, suggests this game might not be as close as we expect.  The last three NFC Championship games have been blowouts in the favor of the home team.  Since 2006, this game has been decided by 3 points or less just twice.

With the history lesson behind us I still think this Saints-Rams battle is going to come down to the right instep of Saints kicker Will Lutz or Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein.  I just hope Will Lutz is ready for his moment, when it arrives.  Lutz has been outstanding this season. He’s 28-30 in field goals and 52-53 on extra points. Lutz has just three misses total.  His season long of 54 yards ironically came against the Rams in week 9.  Now, here’s the rub.  Zuerlein’s numbers are nearly identical.  He’s 27-31 in field goals and 35-36 on extra points with a long of 56 yards.

One of these two men are going to either be the hero or the goat. This game will come down to a field goal attempt to put their team in the Super Bowl.   If you believe in divine intervention, and it’s Will Lutz lining up to boot the Saints to Atlanta, say one last prayer that the kick stays true.
