Garic: Will the Saints move up into round 2 of the Draft?

The Saints are always on the lookout to move up in the NFL draft. As rounds 2 and 3 kickoff today, the Saints currently don't have a second round pick. The Saints DNA has always been to be aggressive during the draft. I fully expect GM Mickey Loomis & head coach Sean Payton to at some point either acquire an additional third round pick or perhaps even a second round selection.

Without a lot of draft capitol (draft picks), acquiring more picks would have to involve a current player or two.  The Saints have a plethora of talent on the interior offensive line.  Veteran guard Larry Warford is entering the final year of his contract.   He's a moveable player.  Keep in mind he's a Pro Bowl guard, so Warford is an attractive prospect that the Saints aren't going to give away. Warford could fetch the team a second or a third round pick, perhaps multiple picks.

Last off-season the Saints signed C/G Nick Easton. They don't need him anymore. Easton isn't as good as Warford, but could be a package with a pick from next year, maybe a pick this year. That could end up landing the Saints a second round selection. Easton is less valuable than Warford, but still valuable.

Another player who comes to mind right away is Safety Marcus Williams. Three years ago the Saints drafted him in the second round.  Williams’ three seasons in New Orleans have been a roller coaster. He struggles to tackle. His ball skills are above average. I think the Saints could package Williams with a draft pick this year or next to gain a pick in this draft.

If the Saints trade up into round 2, who could be some players targeted by the Black & Gold?  LSU Safety Grant Delpit are USC WR Michael Pittman Jr.  are just a couple who come to mind.

Buckle up!  It's day two of the NFL draft.  Gonna be fun!
