The Butler did it.

The early darling of Saints training camp, rookie receiver Emmanuel Butler, returned to the practice field today.  Butler was the star of camp until an ankle injury sidelined him for about a week. The rookie out of Northern Arizona was a big factor early on but now has some ground to make up.

Transactions: The Saints put offensive lineman Ulrick John on injured reserve, waived tight end Jake Powell, and terminated the contract of WR Rishard Mathews.

The veteran wide out left the team.

“It happens, this is a physical game. It’s demanding, it takes a lot of commitment.  You could tell it was up and down days.  Maybe it was an ailment with his body, or maybe mentally he just didn’t want it anymore” explained Saints color analyst Deuce McAllister.

Attendance:  Offensive lineman Terron Armstead was in attendance at the beginning of practice, but quickly exited with a trainer.  Cornerback Marcus Sherels also sat out his third practice.  Wide receiver Keith Kirkwood was a no go as well.

Deuces Dimes:  Saints color analyst Deuce McAllister chatted after about the Saints preseason opener, a 34-25 loss to Vikings.

Deuce explained why the Vikings who tallied 213 yards rushings were able to pop some big runs.

“Some guys took some bad angles, and that’s why the Vikings had so much success,” McAllister explained. “I think some of it was the speed of the game.”

The Saints are back on the field tomorrow morning at the team’s training facility in Metairie.
