Bobby Hebert, the first quarterback to lead the Saints to the playoffs, was amped by the performance of Drew Brees and the Saints offense today. Hebert boasts, “This is by far the best day of practice for the Saints offense.”

Seven days into Saints training camp, the defense was grabbing most of the headlines.  Today, the offense sought respect and gained revenge.  “This was the kind of practice we’d see in past training camps,” observed the Cajun Cannon. “Which is not necessarily good, because our defense was getting smoked (in the past).  I kind of like it when our defense wins now and then,”
smiled Hebert.

Quarterback Drew Brees was surgical today.  The offense targeted WR Mike Thomas a lot. I counted eight different receptions from No. 13 today.

It wasn’t total domination by the offense, though.  Rookie Saquan Hampton turned in a leaping interception in the team period of practice.  QB Teddy Bridgewater was trying to dump the ball right over his head and the young safety was having no part of that.
Hebert called the play, “One of the most impressive interceptions of training camp so far.” Hampton is quietly having a really strong camp.

The Cajun Cannon points out what’s becoming consistently obvious, “Hampton’s one we’re always talking about...also Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Man, we have a lot of depth and competition at that safety position.”

The Cannon says the true path for Saquan Hampton to find a spot on the Saints roster is in the kicking game. His advice for the young Saint, “Kick butt on special teams! That’s what he did at Rutgers.  It will be interesting to see what he does in the pre-season games.”

Man, it was hot at practice and the players, coaches and even members of the media got a little treat after practice... SNOWBALLS!  The team had a portable snowball stand just off the practice field.  It was a perfect day for one too.

Bobby’s favorite?  Coconut!  He says he likes coconut because it won’t stain his teeth or lips like other flavors might.  My favorite?  Cherry with extra syrup add condensed milk!  A perfect ending to a brutally hot day.

The Saints are back at practice tomorrow evening at Tulane University’s Yulman Stadium at 7pm.  Under the lights baby!
