WWL’s Seth Dunlap spoke with the color analyst for LSU baseball Doug Thompson about the final stretch of the regular season for the Tigers.

Surprisingly, LSU isn’t a lock for the postseason  The Tigers are having a down season, but they are certainly primed for a big year next year.

“I think it’ll be a great season next year to look forward to.  There are lots of returning guys with lots of meaningful innings under their belt, a lot of SEC innings.  There’s a ton of guys offensively as well who’ll make an impact.”

One of those players is freshman pitcher Ma’Khail Hilliard, who has been a force on the mound for LSU, going 8-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 56 innings.

“I don’t think anybody could’ve expected how solid, how consistent he’s been as a freshman.  It’s one thing to go out and have a couple good games and even been dominant; but to do it almost every week in and out is pretty good.”

While the future is bright, this season is not over yet; and Thompson isn’t counting LSU out.

“I’m with Coach Mainieri.  If his history proves itself, then Paul Mainieri, at this time of the year, has done some pretty remarkable things.  This team’s back is against the wall; you have a lot of kids in that lineup who were in Omaha last year.”

What do the Tigers need to do ensure they make it to the postseason?

“I think they need to get six or seven wins in the SEC for sure.  I think the midweek game wins mean a little bit more at this point.  And I think they have to play well into the weekend in the SEC to finish this thing out.”

Regardless of what ends up happening, Thompson knows this team won’t just roll over.

“Like every Paul Mainieri team in the past, you can look forward to these guys fighting it out until the end.”
