Does the Saints' QB draft streak end in 2017?

The last time the team drafted a QB in the first round was 1971

When it comes to drafting QB’s in the NFL, no one stays away from that area more so than the Black and Gold New Orleans Saints. In fact when it comes to drafting a top tier QB the Saints are dead last in doing so.

Deke what do you mean?  Well glad you asked!  Top tier QB’s according to most and all analyst are QB’s that are projected to be among the first drafted in that particular year.  Currently two teams of the NFL’s 32 member club have not drafted a top tier QB in a very long time.

Did you know the last time the New Orleans Saints drafted at QB in the first round of the draft was the one and only Archie Manning?  Yes!  You have to go all the way back to the first round (#2 overall) when the Saints took Manning in the 1971 NFL Draft.  And for those wondering what other team has gone a long period of time without drafting a QB in the first round, well that goes to the Chiefs of K.C. who last drafted a QB in the first round of the 1983 draft.  K.C. took Penn State QB Todd Blackledge.

But the numbers go a lot deeper than that when it comes to the Saints and their drafting QB’s in the annual draft.  New Orleans has avoided drafting a QB in the first and second round of the draft the last 46 years.

In fact the highest drafted QB during that time span was Colorado State signal caller Garrett Grayson.  The Saints took Grayson in the 3rd round (75th overall) of 2015 NFL Draft.  However, New Orleans did draft Illinois QB Dave Wilson in the 1981 Supplemental Draft.

Looking at draft history, the Saints have drafted a total of 15 QB’s since they called Archie Manning’s name in the first round of the 1971 NFL Draft.  A few other QB’s that the Saints have drafted over the years included 1994 Idaho’s Doug Nussmeier, in 1997 the Saints landed Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel in 1997 and eight years later the Saints went with Florida State QB Adrian McPherson in the 5th round.  Those three selections were the next highest QB picks the Saints have ever made next to Manning in the first round back in 1971 and Garrett Grayson in round three back in the 2015 NFL Draft.

When looking at this year;s crop of QB’s I think the run on QB’s could be set off early in the draft (top 7) and then keep a close eye on picks 10 through 13.  The teams picking in that time frame are Buffalo at #10, the Saints at 11, Cleveland at 12 and Arizona at #13.

Again I’m taking into account that one maybe two QB’s are off the board by the time the Bills pick at #10.  Let’s say that Trubisky from UNC and DeShaun Watson are gone by the time the Bills pick.  That would signify to me that teams are getting a little anxious so to speak in not wanting to miss out on a player they feel is a top flight QB.

Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes has been steadily rising and Florida State by way of Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer are next on the draft boards according to most.  So does that mean those two QB’s and who has been picked prior bump up other names like Davis Webb, Brad Kaaya or Nate Peterman?
