Ok there are many ways you can breakdown a team’s stats.  Overall team stats, game stats, first half stats, second half stats, first quarter stats, etc.  When it comes to the New Orleans Saints Defense the Black and Gold are coming off another stout defensive effort.  And when the Saints win, they play as good of defense as there is in the NFL.  And they have the numbers to support that statement.

After a 0-2 start to the 2017 season the Saints are on fire.  New Orleans has four straight games and the defense is what has been standing out in those four victories.  To give a better indication of how far the Saints have come over the last four weeks of the season I think the first two games have to be brought back up.

The Saints were blown out at the hands of the Vikings and Patriots in back to back weeks.  In those two games the Black and Gold allowed some monster numbers.  In those two games the Saints averaged giving up 512.5 yards of total offense per game, 32.5 points per game, and 26 first downs per game.

And now the Saints have completely turned things around.  The Saints four game win streak is filled with a lot of big plays, long stretches of consistent execution and they look like a team that is coming together.

In victories over Carolina, Miami, Detroit and Green Bay the Saints are putting up numbers that are near what the best defensive units in the NFL allow.  The Saints are giving up 17 points per game in this four game stretch which would be tops in scoring defense on average.

Denver owns the top defense in total yards allowed per game giving up 261.8 yards per game.  The Saints are not far off that number surrendering just 270.3 yards of total defense in this four game streak.

New Orleans is allowing 109 yards rushing per game in this stretch and 161.3 passing yards.  And it seems like every week during the four game win streak a different Saints Defender is coming up with big plays.

Cam Jordan, Kenny Vaccaro, Ken Crawley, Marshawn Lattimore, Craig Robertson, A.J. Klien and the list goes on.  The Saints are putting good pressure on opposing QB’s, New Orleans has 14 sacks in the win streak.  And the Black and Gold are plus +5 in the turnover ratio.

For those of you who still don’t believe I would say that you not believing the Saints are legit on defense to just pay attention to the numbers.  Look at the top defensive teams in the NFL, see what they are allowing on average.  And then look at what the Saints do each game.

Because in this four game run the Black and Gold are on the Saints Defense has played more like a Top 5 defense more times than not.  And if those numbers continue the Saints win streak could last a long time.  And the Black and Gold will become a team that everyone will classify as a playoff team that looks like a solid title contender.
